Mens 4x100 Relay - Olympic Swimming
www.youtube.com

If you feel strongly that your opinion is the right one, please head over to the link I've provided.

Pretty phenomenal. Swimming normally bores me, but the finals I have seen have been so close. The womens 400 (forget discipline) was another race where the leader had a metre or so distance between coming into the last 10m, and then just fell into silver. Also, that is an insane amount of time to be ahead of the world record. I wonder, are they going to train in the old suits and then put on the hydrophobic ones for competitions?

All the national pride does make me kinda uncomfortable Bad vibes I guess, but then this IS the Olympics. I just cheer for whoever is in first place.

"GOOOOO FRANCE......GO AMERICA YEAHHHHHHH!"

Super Slow Motion Lightning
That was pretty special. I have to go and find out how lightning works now.

ok. Wiki says the leader takes 100s of milliseconds to reach the ground before the discharge. It also says the successive "strokes" are 40-50 milliseconds apart. I'm guesstimating that the video shows lightning slowed by about 50 times.

Funniest Sitcom Ever Made
I remember the outcry not so long ago when Fox planned to make an American version of Spaced, similar to The Office. Because of the huge response by fans, Pegg, Wright and Hynes, Fox decided not to go ahead with it. Surely a triumph.

Love Pegg. I feel a little twinge of patriotism whenever I see decent British comedy. How totally pathetic, I know.

Pornography Myths (Femme Talk Post)
MYTH NUMBER THE FIRST.

I don't know if porn really cultivates good relationships, but in my experience it doesn't particularly damage them either. It depends entirely on the person...I know peeps that watch porn for the terrible plots, for comedy more than for arousal.

MYTH NUMBER THE SECOND.

True enough, some Men appreciate the male body

MYTH NUMBER THE THIRD.

This one I agree with as well. I've known people who have been addicted to porn, it happens on rare occasions. I've also known people who have ruined their lives through alcohol. As ever, its all about moderation.

FOUR

Its a Myth.

FIFTH

Yeah, I don't really think that masturbating to a red head or blonde is going to make a guy less likely to cheat on his brunette. However, some people make polygamous relationships work. Fantasising about a girl in a porno is ok even in a monogamous relationship as long as your partner is ok with it. (rare I know, but still...)

SIX

Some people can make valuable careers out of it. I'm not sure I'd want my daughter doing it, but you know, lets dismiss the myth that the porn industry is a wasted career.

SEVEN

Ha! When you meet a man that uses this one stay the fuck away

EIGHT

Hard to say, I guess you'll never know until you're a porn star.

NINE

Its a fantasy for me!

I certainly don't think porn is destroying society, and I don't think it has to be especially sexist or demeaning of women either. I don't think I'd want porn, or even sex, to become a conversation topic over dinner, I still want it to remain a little scandalous, but I do tire of the constant vilification of pornography. A massive percentage of males regularly watch pornography, and we aren't all a bad bunch. The fact that a relatively small amount of women watch porn is perhaps because so much of it is targeted at men, and this is perhaps because the entire concept of porn doesn't appeal to most women.

Baghdad 5 Years Later. Seriously WTF Have We Done to Iraq?
I don't think the US really changed the country. All their guns and planes removed a dictator and his army, but you cant make peace with bullets and shrapnel. The US fought a conventional war in unconventional times. I don't know whats worse; that the leaders is Washington failed to learn from past mistakes and tried to fight long standing hatred and deep divides with an army, or that they knew democracy could not be forced and that it really was all blood for oil.

How simple is it to understand that the politics of a country is not just dependent on its leader? You cannot simply hang the head of a country and expect all those beneath to fall into line. Far from me to advocate the criminal Saddam was, but his influence was massive and it was plain to see his removal would create a power vacuum that would suck the place into chaos.

All the while its spun to the people as part of the War on Terror, and the people believed it. I was 13 years old on 9/11, and even I knew it was not Saddam's hand guiding those planes. What a colossal failure to let all this happen.

I hope History remembers ALL the crimes of war.

Breakthrough in storing Solar Energy
>> ^GeeSussFreeK:Words.

Hey, nice post.

I read a thing a year or so ago about a new technology that enabled production of much cheaper and more efficient solar panels, but I can't seem to find any information on it now, so I wonder if it was just a pipe dream or something.

If I remember correctly the panels were paper thin and flexible, like laminated card, were durable to weather but eventually required replacing after 6 months or so of use. They were also supposed to be vastly superior in efficiency and their production allowed them to be "printed" en masse, and sold at approximately one dollar per metre square.

Obviously I was very excited about this. People could turn every south facing wall into a solar panel relatively cheaply and if the efficiency was as high as the article boasted you'd probably be able to light, heat and power most of the appliances in your house on your own energy. Alas, no cheap solar power yet.

Anyway, if all of Earths energy (with the exception of Geothermal, Nuclear and The Tides?) comes from the sun, be it stored in ancient pressurised plant matter or firewood, it would seem to make sense to find a good of way of tapping energy straight from the source.

A Chilling Account: Stabbed and Beheaded on Greyhound Bus
We all have the benefit of hindsight on this one, so we could all sit here for days on end making ifs and buts. "What if the driver had a gun, what if the killer didn't have a knife, what if the victim had a stab proof vest?" I'm not saying his death was unpreventable by any means, merely that the measures to prevent all irrational psychopaths are unrealistic. As ever the freedoms "we" enjoy come with a sacrifice whenever they are misused.

I'll keep the rest of my opinions to myself. I feel terrible for the families and friends of the victim, I don't know how I'd cope if that happened to me.

Breakthrough in storing Solar Energy
If this tech is so simple to install and maintain perhaps it could see use in developing nations as a means of providing power for remote areas which are not attached to any sort of power grid?

Anyway, great sift. It doesn't appear to be particularly related to solar power though, as far as I can see anything could power the conversion process.

Thing is, I know somebody who has a wind turbine and it goes from producing too much power to too little or none at all. When he has a surplus it gets pumped onto the national grid and he gets compensated by the power company. So, its not like the excess is being wasted, and the money from the power company pays for the electricity he uses when the wind drops, so he has no real need to store the energy he produces. Ofc, in an ideal world everybody would have a wind turbine, and then you would need an energy store for when the wind drops, but while renewables are in the minority...

Anyway, gogo energy independance.
