His vote is a symbol of what he truly believes and/or what he believes is representative of the state/district that elected him. By the time it was his turn to actually vote, it was irrelevant whether he was for or against the health care bill - hence, his vote was purely symbolic.

You guys are statists. You believe the State should control health care and rule those evil corporations with an iron fist. I don't.
Putting aside the illegality and intrusiveness of this socialized medicine bill, do you believe the government of FEMA, the post office, Amtrak and GM--the same government which couldn't meet its own quota of H1N1 flu shots--can efficiently and more cheaply run 1/6th of the economy better than private companies?
Do you really think Pelosi will make good on her threats in this monstrosity of a bill and throw people in jail for not buying health insurance?
